It is very interesting that the lingering feelings to un-unite German and to re-erect the wall exist. Germany was only divided for a short portion of its history, yet stereotypes not only were developed but continue to exist along the country's division. It is interesting hearing the accounts of those that were young at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It seems like this generation may kick off a cultural shift that would put any divisions between the East and West to rest.

For every generation, there is the sentiment among many that the past was better than the present. For this reason, it is not surprising that this "Ostalgie" is present among certain generations of Germans. It is difficult to embrace such radical changes to a way of life, and to expect universal acceptance of these changes is overlooking key societal traits.

There tend to be many cultural lines drawn between the Northern United States and the Southern United States, so the cultural differences between that of Germany's North and South are not all that surprising. And the reason's seem eerily similar compared to the U.S. Religion is a very dividing factor between North U.S. and South U.S., as are food and dialect. But every large country has such regional differences.

I can completely understand the interrogation, per se, of foreigners. I assume that it is purely curiosity-based. It would be for me. I LOVE to ask people from other places lots of questions. I get excited meeting people from other states, let alone countries. It makes sense that they ask questions that may sound stupid to us. We do it all the time to others, and I think that we often don't realize it when we do it.

It is extremely funny to me that an obscure movie in English is so popular and traditional in Germany. One would think that such a unique country, especially one with such a rich film tradition. Germany doesn't need films from other countries. Why did it click so well with the German people?

Reading these culture articles on Germany makes me realize that I never want to shop in German stores. They're either too expensive or hellish to shop in. The quality in the budget stores is awful. And now I find out that the hours are terrible as well. Good lord. It's a good thing that this is improving in metropolitan areas, because I want to go to Germany, and I'll need my Sunday Diet Coke.

German Dads know how to party. That's all I'll say about that.

As someone who likes to stay organized and avoid as much paperwork as possible, the German obsession of documenting every official aspect of life is very intimidating. Especially now that documents are becoming more and more electronic and paper is being used less and less, for convenience and environmental reasons, the German way of continually creating and hording documents is somewhat baffling. On the other hand, there have been numerous instances where I wish that I had all of my personal documents more accessible and organized, and Germans seem to know how to remedy that.

It's interesting that Germans have a code for neighborly-ness. There are definitely times that I feel like my neighborhood should instate quiet hours (my house's quiet hours don't start until midnight). Very rarely do people see eye to eye on how to act as neighbors, so having a code of conduct can be very beneficial, but it also creates rules that can, and will be, broken.

Patriotism is a weird thing nowadays. In America, a lack of patriotism is seen as being anti-American. Yet, being overly-patriotic is not viewed positively. When a country has both shame and pride, it is difficult to find a middle ground for patriotism. Germany is in a similar situation in that their shame from Hitler's reign makes German patriotism, mainly flag-flying, particularly sensitive. It would be interesting to see what other countries experience similar traits.

The German fear of drafts is quite interesting. Drafts are just mild amounts of air coming from outside to inside, and yet an entire country has a collective phobia of it. Even in a state of discomfort, opening the window is frowned upon.

The articles on German culture have made it clear that Germans collectively have many eccentricities that set them uniquely apart from other countries. And these eccentricities exist in practically every aspect of life, including the medical aspect. Germans seem to have certain collective irregularities when it comes to diseases. Some conditions seem to only exist in Germany, and others seem to exist very differently in Germany. Germans are not only unique in behavior, they are unique biologically it seems.

Considering the German affection for nudity, it is not a surprise that saunas are somewhat ritualistic in Germany. It is also not surprising that the Finns introduced saunas to the Germans. It was interesting finding out how that tradition was brought by Finland to Germany.

I have always found the German university system amusing. I also find it quite appealing, as I would prefer to live a college lifestyle forever, ESPECIALLY if the government subsidizes it. I could very easily take advantage of the German system, but it seems as if that system will be no more. Which is not surprising, given the current state of the world's economy and the high cost of subsidizing education.

Kapitel 7

The articles on German shopping, driving, and "waiting in line" make Germany sound so barbaric for a 1st world country! I guess every country, no matter the level of development, has some very uncivilized features in its civilization.
I
When it comes bargain shopping, while the article made Germany seem very bad, I don't see the United States as that much worse. There was a store on the corner of South University and Forest that was mainly beer/wine/liquor and convenience stuff, but they also sold some groceries. Reading the description of German groceries instantly reminded me of this store's fruits and veggies. Moldy. Old. Contaminating. And very indifferent employees. The rest of the description of a German bargain store can definitely be found in American stores at various times. Dollar stores are similar eye-sores most of the time, the wrestling match for checking out is common in every Meijer I've been in, and the overall battle of the store is very Black Friday-esque.

I've been on some nasty roads, but nothing as bad as the Autobahn. Death was expressed as a possibility in EVERY scenario, and I've never been somewhere where the speed minimum was enforced greater than the speed limit. The Autobahn seems to be the epitome of the need to possess the German code of conduct, if you will, as acting "non-German" will get you killed by traffic (or at least heavily fined).

I enjoyed finding out that, while I hate waiting in line, it can get so much worse... in Germany. German lines are not lines, but crowds that taper into the width of one person. It is described as almost controlled chaos. Again, if you don't know how Germans operate, you are at a massive disadvantage.
