Kultur 5

Der Spiegel Timeline + Brennpunkt Kulturs from Vorsprung:
Germany has had a very turbulent past. Germany wasn't unified as a nation until 1871. Shortly after, Germany found itself in the First World War. In 1918, after the First World War, the Weimar Republic was established. This democratic system experienced limited success because it had to overcome things like war reparations, unemployment, inflation, and a world economic crisis. This allowed radical parties, such as the Nazi party, to come in and make radical promises, which the people of Germany believed. Once the Nazi party had control of Germany, it wasn't long until Germany found itself in the Second World War. Following the Second World War, Germany was divided into four occupation zones. There was a lot of heat between the US and USSR occupied zones in Berlin. East Germany (USSR occupied) eventually built a wall around West Berlin to separate their conflicting ideals and to prevent the loss of their work force to the West. Until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, there were a lot of reunification protests in East Germany. East and West Germany were finally reunited in 1990.

According to one of the articles, there is still an "Ostalgie" in a select group of Germans today. In other words, they want the Berlin Wall back. According to the article this group includes about 25% of West Germans and 12% of East Germans. I think something like this can be expected. It could take years before the population truly becomes united.
